Name/Occupation/Residency
My name is Christina Berry, I live inLewistonand work at rite aid as a shift supervisor.

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
Honestly my mom met my stepdad and it was love at first sight, so we moved here 12 years ago.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
The variety of cultures. There is so much to learn from people. I also love how the downtowns are growing.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I’d like to see the unused buildings get used. Some of the buildings have so much character.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
Boston, because it’s so big and there’s always so much going on. I love the hustle and bustle.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
The one that comes to mind it having a nice dinner at Fuel.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
This biggest risk I’ve taken is going up in a hot air balloon. I’m scared of heights.

Name/Occupation/Residency
My name is Jill Cunningham. I am an accounting assistant for the City ofAuburn. I currently live next door to work, above Reid’s Gun Shop in downtownAuburn.

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I am fromLewiston, grew up living and working in L/A. I went to USM in Gorham for 1 year, then transferred to USM L/A where I graduated with my Leadership degree in 2004. While I was finishing up my last full year of my bachelors, I worked in the business office at LAC. I then moved to theAuburnCity Hall and started my full time position with the city in April 2008. My position with the City ofAuburn is why I’ve stayed in the area.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
Currently I’ve enjoyed the variety of different activities in the downtown. I attended a fantastic New Years Eve event at Fuel, various wine tastings at the Vault, Wii bowling at Davinci’s, and lastly but not least, brunch atMarche. Having all of these options and events with great places in the downtown is encouraging for the downtown.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I would have to sayProvidence,RI. The Providence Place Mall is a lot of fun shopping in, and with Johnson andWales culinary school there are many different places to eat. My husband studied inProvidence, so when we go back to visit it is a lot of fun. Each time we’ve gone back we have tried a different restaurant and I’m always pleased with our adventures there!

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
Just a few weeks ago, it was one of my friends birthday. I put together a ladies night on the town. We started at Sarah Jeanne’s Salon for some pampering, after hanging out in the hot tub there, we headed of to Fish Bones for some appetizers and wine, and ended our evening with a night cap at Gritty’s L/A. It was great enjoying the downtown of both cities and wehad an exciting night out.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I do value a unified downtown, because there are great things going on with both of the downtowns. When the scavenger hunt took place it incorporated both downtowns in a positive way. It showed many of us how you can easily walk to any thing within both the downtowns. Having both of the cities working together is a positive thing overall. I hope it continues.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
The biggest risk I’ve taken was spending 2 ½ weeks abroad inSingapore studying leadership. USM LAC started a leadership abroad summer program, I was one of the individuals that helped get the program of the ground, and our trip was the first of many to come for the students of USM LAC. During our trip we were able to visit other colleges, resorts, businesses, and various restaurants

February 2012

Name/Occupation/Residency
My name is Amanda Similien.  I am a self-described entrepreneur with two businesses I am growing and excited to launch into this region.  I am the sole proprietor and owner of Maine Street Events, LLC an event planning business based out of Brunswick.  I also partnered with the creators of Proactiv® as an Executive Consultant with Rodan + Fields Dermatologists. We provide the latest in anti-aging and sun-damage solutions. I am looking for smart and savvy business minded folks to join me as we launch this company in the Maine and New England markets.

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
Having been a Maine resident for (almost) my entire life, living and working in the Mid Coast area, I desire to expand my business horizons. I am excited by the growth and development of the L/A area, while it still maintains the historical.  I look forward to learning more about this area, the people who live & work here and to begin partnering with YPLAA members and the larger community.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I love the physical bones of the old buildings, the closeness of the streets, and the strength that seems to breathe in the physical nature of the cities. Also the Androscoggin River plays a huge piece in the natural aspect of the community.  There is juxtaposition between the natural and metropolitan aspects of this region, blending in a way that seems to breathe the reality of many Mainers. I love to drive down the main drags and imagine this area active and embracing all of the cultures that have, and will, call L/A home.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I’m so new to this community in more than just a passing through way, that I am not sure yet what I would suggest for the downtown. I’d love to see about doing some fun events that would draw out the businesses, those with storefront presence, and those of us working from our laptops, so that we could meet each other, the community members, celebrate the area and get to know our neighbors better.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I’d have to say Camp Perrin, Haiti. It is where I met my husband just two weeks into my stint as a Peace Corps Volunteer. The natural beauty, fresh fruit and amazing climate are just lovely. Can’t wait to get back to see the in-laws again soon!

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
As a parent of small children, a night out on the town, anywhere, is something that is few and far between.  I think I would love to do a progressive supper of sorts to try out some of the amazing food I keep hearing about in this area and walk around to see the buildings and boulevards by foot. Suggestions?

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I don’t know, as I am so new to this community. I do believe it is important to have the communities working well and with a great partnership. Plus ease and visibility for pedestrian traffic is important.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
Besides becoming a parent to two amazing boys, I believe the biggest risk was going out on my own for business at the start of the recession.  I thrive in working for myself, and setting up my own boundaries, but it is definitely a constant challenge and risk to keep growing, building and supporting my family.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I am excited to learn more about YPLAA and all that there is to participate in, and how I might fit in. I hope to become an active participant, learn about the organization, the people and the region.  I will definitely share thoughts and ideas as they come.

Name/Occupation/Residency
Molly Basile, Executive Chef, Marché

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
In 2010 I moved back to Maine and got a job at Marché. I am now a Lewiston resident and appreciate living and working in this community.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
What I truly enjoy most are both a strong sense of camaraderie among our community and also being a part of the rejuvenation of the downtown itself. Not only is it growing but the growth is unique.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I think the improvements are already being made. Farmers markets and local businesses that cater to all aspects of the community. And perhaps more thorough snow removal.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
San Diego. Perfect weather and awesome landscape.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
Because food is my passion, my nights out usually involve lots of good food!

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I absolutely do. Lewiston has qualities Auburn does not and vice versa. There is something for everyone.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
Dedicating myself to The culinary profession, I think. It’s challenging and rewarding.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I think the YPLAA is a fantastic organization and stands for much of the evolving, close knit community we are discussing. I am honored to be involved in this and the community of l/a.

Name/Occupation/Residency
Shannon Coffin, Programs Manager at Good Shepherd Food Bank, Auburn, Maine

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I’ve been living in Auburn for several years now,and my husband and I’s decision to stay put for the long term had a lot to do with our jobs. My husband, Tristan Coffin, is an IT Specialist at Paychex in Auburn and I manage child hunger programs and the Mobile Pantry for the Food Bank. I am one of those very blessed people that can honestly say if I didn’t need the money, I’d still happily do my job everyday for free. Since the Food Bank’s reach is statewide, I often travel all over Maine for Mobile Pantry distributions, or to talk with local schools or civic groups about starting up BackPack Programs or Kids Cafe sites. Living in Auburn allows my husband and I to be close to our offices and convenient to the turnpike, all while looking out our windows to open fields and friendly neighbors. While the cities have a lot to offer, they are still small enough that it’s easy to find a group or cause that your interested in and get involved in a meaningful way. Since setting down roots in the community I’ve enjoyed being on the planning committee for Art Walk Lewiston Auburn, helping out at Greater Androscoggin Humane Society’s Come.Stay.Adopt 24 hour adoption event, and being a part of YPLAA’s Communications Committee. Through these projects I’ve discovered a very motivated and dedicated group of young professionals that I’m proud to call colleagues and friends.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I come from a very small town in Maine where my closest neighbors lived across the hay field not the road, and they were my Aunt and Uncle. I love that I can live in Lewiston/Auburn and enjoy luxuries like high speed internet (and paved roads), without having to give up that quintessentially Maine, close knit community feeling, that I so enjoyed growing up in. When my husband and I go out to Guthrie’s we seem to always run into friendly familiar faces, and when I get my groceries at Blackies I most always have a pleasant conversation with the owner or one of his grandchildren at the checkout. Furthermore, both downtown’s are very dog friendly and I love having plenty of places I can take my dog with me to enjoy a day out too.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
Having worked for the New England Products Trade Show prior to the Food Bank, supporting Maine producers is very important to me. I think it would be a great draw for our communities if we had more Made-In-Maine specialty foods, jewelry, art and giftware available in local stores.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I recently had the opportunity to attend a Feeding America conference in Chicago through a scholarship awarded to the Food Bank. I loved all of the intriguing architecture, and while I didn’t have much time for sight seeing, the art exhibits in Millenium Park were something I won’t soon forget.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
The final Art Walk Lewiston Auburn event of the season this September has to be one of the most enjoyable nights out in the downtown that I’ve ever had. I enjoyed a great night of talented local artists, saw a fantastic locally made film about Kennedy Park at Lewiston Public Library, had some delicious appetizers from The Library Cafe at J Dostie Jewelers, and then ended the night mingling with friends and listening to local musician Justin Labbe at the Captive Elements Art House Grand Opening.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
Yes, I do see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities. When the potentials of both cities together are highlighted, it creates a more well rounded, diverse overall community more attractive to businesses, new ventures, and more young professionals.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
I sort of decided that I was going to work at Good Shepherd Food Bank before anyone there had any idea who I was, let alone had a job opening I was suited for. Somehow I knew that it was where I was suppose to be, so I was persistent and accepted the first position they were willing to offer to me. Nearly two years later, I am in the exact position I’ve always dreamed of, helping to find creative new ways to better feed Maine’s most vulnerable citizens and children. I adore the work that I do, the team that I am a part of, and the community that I get to live and work in.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
In just the short time I’ve been involved in the Communications Committee, I’ve already seen YPLAA growing and evolving to better meet the needs of our Young Professional Community. I’m excited to see what professional development workshops, networking opportunities, and community service projects 2012 has in store for us!

4 Lisbon St. Downtown Lewiston

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
My family’s business has been in downtown Lewiston for over 60 years. When I started working for the company I was apprenticing under my father in our Portland location, I occasionally had to travel to Lewiston to cover vacations and drop off deliveries. It was in these short visits to Lewiston that I could see the potential for the future of the downtown and realized that I could be a part of it.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
Unlike other cities or downtown areas, in Lewiston a single person can make a difference. A single person can effect great change.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I wouldn’t say that I would like to see things progress differently than they have, but I would rather see more of the progress and development that we have been seeing over the past five and ten years. More individuals and businesses investing in the downtown. More restaurants, more galleries, more companies moving into the mills, more events in Railroad park, more people choosing to live in the downtown.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I might be a bit biased because I had lived there for several years, but I would have to say in-town Portland. Portland’s Old Port is essentially a playground for people in their early 20?s to early 40?s. It has almost everything you could want from a larger city but still maintains a small town feel.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
Throughout the summer my “Twin City Nights” have been spent working and helping organize our local Art Walk, but a night out that many of my friends have described is as follows: Meeting up with friends at Pedro’s for a couple cocktails, spending a few hours walking through downtown Lewiston’s Art Walk, stopping off at Fuel for an appetizer, heading down to Fishbones for dinner, then finishing the evening off with a pint at Gritty’s

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I see a unified identity between the two downtowns as advantageous in many ways but also I see the competition between our cities as an asset as well. I think each city should focus its efforts on rebuilding its own downtown identity, thus creating diversity. The two areas will always work well together due to such close proximity.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
My biggest risk is one that I started January 1st 2006 and is still ongoing. That would be investing myself in Lewiston and it’s Downtown. I have had great opportunities to work and live in much larger and economically safer areas both in and outside of Maine, but as I mentioned earlier I could see great potential here. I think for too long people have settled on mediocrity and been satisfied with what they are given but I look at this community and I see the shell of something much greater. I don’t have millions of dollars to affect change so my risk is personal investment, but the reward will be a city with limitless possibilities.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I would like to see YPLAA continue to focus on the downtown areas, possibly undertake some kind of festival.

October 2011

Name/Occupation/Residency
Katie Grise, Manager of Purchasing & Production Planning, Rancourt & Co Shoecrafters in Lewiston. My husband and I live inOxford

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I actually grew up in the Exeter area of New Hampshire and attended college in Chicago – where I met my husband. Matthew and I moved here 3 years ago for a new job that he accepted as the Pastor of Pleasant Street Baptist Church in Mechanic Falls, ME. We lived our first 1.5 years in Auburn, then bought our first house and moved to Oxford in April, 2010.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
My absolute favorite thing is coming down Goff’s Hill in the morning on my way into work and looking over Lewiston and the beautiful historical architecture. I love the history and the way L/A embraces and showcases it.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I’d like to see more of the arts – local plays, shows, concerts.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I’m somewhat partial because I lived there for three years as well, but my absolute favorite city is Chicago. I love the layout and cleanliness of the city, the friendly people, the arts/theater, and the food is to die for. I always seem to find new little boutiques and fun places to stop in whenever I go. There are so many parks, theaters, and attractions to see – it’s a city of which I never grow tired. There’s always something to see and some place to go.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately
My husband and I recently discovered the downtown River Walk and loved it. It’s an absolutely beautiful trail through some gardens and fun city décor that takes you right over the river. We took the walk during the balloon festival and were on the Auburn side of the river when the balloons started going up. It was picturesque…a beautiful late summer evening watching the balloons rise over the sunset. We will remember it for a long time.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
You can never go wrong when people and cities are likeminded. Better economy, better schools, better community. I love that this area is known as “L/A”. That, in and of itself, displays its unity.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
The biggest risk I (we) have ever taken was leaving my job, home, family, friends, church and everything ‘home’ to me in New Hampshire to come up to Maine. It took over a month before I found a job, but it’s the best decision we ever made. We love our life in Maine and love that it’s the place we have made our home together – unique to both of us. We have made many new friends and have visited many of the beautiful places in Maine since we moved up here that we otherwise would not have experienced. Our desire is to stay in Maine for many, many years to come.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I honestly have not been introduced to YPLAA before now. I look forward to learning more about what YPLAA is all about and what you have to offer in the L/A area.

September 2011

Name/Occupation/Residency
Michelle Gosselin, Owner OMG Events, Lewiston

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I grew up in the small town ofOakland and met my husband, Jeff, at Thomas College. YUP, Jeff Gosselin is my husband. It’s always a fun chuckle when people actually connect the two of us together when they weren’t aware. I worked for St. Mary’sRegionalMedicalCenter for six years and later become Director of Development for Good Shepherd Food Bank for four years.  Since having two children, I became very appreciative of flextime relating to my career and have recently established my own business, OMG Events – Occasions by Michelle Gosselin.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I was actually very nervous moving to the big city ofLewiston in 1996. But I must say that my best friends are in this community, my children love attending school atSt.DominicAcademy and I am truly happy to be associated with the people and businesses who reside Lewiston/Auburn. What I enjoy most is the fact that as a community, we are making it happen here!

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
Like everyone, I would love to see our downtownLisbon Street flourish with respectable businesses and fill the empty store fronts.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
Chicago is my favorite city for sure.  I love the activity, the friendliness, the shopping, the cleanliness and the fact that there is always something to do no matter what time of day or night.  Being a member of Oprah’s audience in 2009 was also a favorite highlight!

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately
One of the best nights out was with my husband.  It was just the two of us and we started the night at Fuel at the bar for FONDUE and cosmos. We made our way to Fishbones for Dinner and ventured to The Falls for dessert. It was great to interact with different people and enjoy the culinary offerings in our downtown cities!  And for those that know me well, you can always find OMG at Pedro O’Hara’s when there is a holiday to celebrate!

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I agree that unifying the downtown cities is beneficial for so many reasons. Most importantly, for economic reasons.  Being involved in many non-profit organization and boards, I have learned firsthand that there is truly a value in bringing programs and employees together in an effort to better utilize funding and resources.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
By far the biggest risk I have ever taken was to establish OMG Events – Occasions by Michelle Gosselin.  My business is available to assist corporations and individuals with their special occasions and/or public relations and marketing needs. From coordinating weddings and celebrations to organizing golf tournaments and galas, I can work with any budget to be sure the client’s expectations are exceeded.  In these economic times I have been warned that this business may not flourish, however, I am able to assist many companies with special projects that they may not have been able to complete on their own, due to lack of staffing or resources.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I truly feel that the YPLAA Board and Committees are doing a remarkable job with the group.  I wish I had more time to participate in the many activities made available.

August 2011

Name/Occupation/Residency
Rene Minnis, Professional Photographer, Sabattus Maine

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
My Husband Jeff and I purchased land in Sabattus to build a house.  We chose Sabattus because the land and taxes were affordable, and we liked the central location to all major Maine cities.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I like the old mill buildings and the visual interest they add to our cities.  I also enjoy the downtown restaurants Fishbones, Mother India, Davinci’s, and Marche.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I would like to see the mill spaces revitalized into condos, boutiques, galleries, etc.  I see a little bit of this, but not enough.  I think if we could get condos going the rest would follow.  If young professional people are living downtown, they will bring the revenue and customers needed to bring in artisans, specialty stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and more.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
I’m not really a city gal ( I live in Sabattus, remember!), but I enjoyed a vacation I took with my friend Bridgit to Key West.  Anywhere we needed to go we could get there on foot.  Great shopping, restaurants, and beaches were abundant.  People were relaxed, and it was nice and warm in February!

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
I had a fabulous time at the last YPLAA culture crawl.  We toured Museum LA, Baxter Brewery, and ended at Fishbones.  It’s interesting to learn about the history of Lewiston and Auburn, and tour local businesses.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
Yes.  What good does rivalry do anyone?  Let’s all work together to make our cities better.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
Changing my career plans the last year of college.  I was getting a degree to teach art, and realized it just wasn’t for me.  I knew it was going to make me unhappy. I decided to take graphic design and more photography courses my last year.  My photo instructor Bernard Meyers put me on the track to commercial photography, by giving me some names of studios I could work for in Portland.  I graduated in 1998, and I’ve been doing photography ever since.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I’m not really sure.  I like what’s happening so far though!

July 2011

Name/Occupation/Residency
Adam Dow, Customer Service Representative @ Mechanics Savings Bank, Auburn

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I was born at CMMC and grew up in Auburn and Greene.  I moved back to Auburn when I was in the 8th grade and attended Edward Little High School.  Besides a four year stint attending college in New Hampshire, I have lived in and around L/A my entire life.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I love the river and the canals we have in our downtown and appreciate how projects such as the Riverwalk have made it easier to access and enjoy them.  Another thing I love about L/A is our fine dining options.  Whenever I have a visitor from out of town I always brag about it, and I honestly believe you won’t find better quality anywhere in the state.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I would love to see more planning done in regards to bicycle and pedestrian traffic and making it easier and safer for people to get place to place using alternative forms of transportation.  I think the river and its falls are our most valuable asset, so I would like to see more emphasis placed on how we could increase opportunities to live, work, and play in close proximity to them while still retaining their natural beauty.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
San Diego, California.   Sunsets over Coronado Bay…enough said.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
Most recently we attended the Art Walk in Lewiston.  I am constantly amazed by the number of outstanding artists we have in this community and surrounding towns.  The event was a tremendous success and we even caught a glimpse of the sun!  As an added bonus I was able to eat at Mother India for the first time (which I have been informed is borderline inexcusable) and am pleased to report it lived up to its fine reputation.  I also took the opportunity to stop in at some of the Somali-owned businesses on Lisbon Street, which was something I had wanted to do for quite some time.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I have never been able to understand the supposed “rivalry” between Lewiston and Auburn.  To me, both communities are made up of tremendously talented people that share many common interests.   It is time for us to put past differences behind us and work together to make L/A the truly great community we all know it can be.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
My decision to become a self-employed financial representative (before coming to the bank) was the biggest professional risk I have ever taken.  Although it didn’t work out, I learned a great deal about myself and feel as though it benefitted me in many ways.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
Recently I attended the Culture Crawl at Museum L/A, Baxter Brewing, and Fishbones.  The turnout was remarkable!  I would like to see YPLAA make the Culture Crawl a monthly event occurring on the same day each month.  I would also like to see YPLAA continue its efforts towards establishing a membership that is truly representative of the diverse industries and employment opportunities available in L/A.

June 2011

Matt BennettName/Occupation/Residency
Matthew Bennett, Accountant with Austin Associates, P.A., Auburn, Maine

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I grew up in the area (Poland and Auburn) before attending college in upstate New York. Upon graduation, I took a job which brought me to Stamford, Connecticut. After spending two years working and living in Connecticut I decided to accept a job offer back here in Auburn to continue my accounting career and begin establishing my life.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I enjoying the feeling that there is always the chance of a familiar face around the corner and the near certainty there will be a friendly face regardless. I’ve seen and been a part of the Battle of the Bridges, gone to Maineiacs games, and other events where the local pride is shrouded (often in maroon and blue) on shirts, jersey’s, cars, and any other possible item. It’s the combination of community, internal rivalry, and unity which gives downtown L/A it’s palpable atmosphere.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I have been pleased to see the new uses and new life built into some of the aging buildings which in some areas were no longer aesthetically pleasing. That being said, I would like to see this continue; it is such a magnet to walk down a street with beautiful shops, offices, and restaurants which all equal and challenge the other in their beauty.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
Boston, it is the only city I have been two which combines the advantages of a large city (i.e. large museums, professional sports teams, historical landmarks, etc.) with the deception of being in what could potentially be a comfortably sized large town. I also feel that I best identified myself with the people in Boston when compared to the other cities I have visited.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
Although always different depending on the evening, there are many different activities and places which can create a night out. I enjoy going out to dinner with family and friends, if for a special event I may find myself at Davinci’s or Marco’s but more commonly enjoy watching any game that might be on at Applebee’s or Gippers. A night out could also include bowling at Sparetime, watching a Maineiacs game, or coaching/playing/watching a local sporting event. As I continue to enjoy my evenings in the L/A area, the specific nights tend to blend into the positive relationships and experiences which I now identify to these locations.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities? Why?
There is always a value through unification when both parties stand to benefit from collaborating efforts. With the geographic proximity and the relationships (both personal and professional) which exist between the two cities there is no wonder events such as the Balloon Festival and the Fourth of July Fireworks have such great turnouts each year. It is at events such as these I see and meet people from communities outside of L/A showing the value and pull which L/A can instill in Androscoggin County as a whole through large collaboration.

How would you like to see YPLAA evolve? Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
Having lived it the area for a majority of my life, I was surprised I had never heard of YPLAA. I think improving the presence in the community has been a focus of YPLAA and should continue to be one for all members.

Name/Occupation/Residency
My name is Bethany Rae Saindon, Marketing Director and Server at Fish Bones American Grill in Lewiston.  I currently live in Auburn!

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I’ve lived in L/A for most of my life!  I did move to North Carolina for college, but returned to L/A in the Spring of 2009!

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I would love to see more jogging and biking trails developed in the community!

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
M
y favorite city would have to be Asheville, North Carolina!  I lived there for two years and worked as the Marketing and Development Assistant at a non-profit children’s museum called The Health Adventure!  I was lucky to work in the center of Asheville’s vibrate downtown area – which sits right in the center of the Smoky Mountains – such a beautiful, modern city.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
I recently enjoyed dinner on the deck at Gritty’s in Auburn!

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
Yes, I do, and I believe it is important to continue a unified downtown identity, especially for the purpose of fundraisers, like the Dempsey Challenge, where our communities are both highlighted in an extremely positive manor!
How would you like to see YPLAA evolve?  Are there activities and/or initiatives you’d like YPLAA to undertake that we are not currently focused on?
I believe it is important to have young professionals unite and work together on accomplishing goals to better their communities! I hope YPLAA continues to focus on establishing the arts in the community!

Kevin Morissette – Intern Architect – Lisbon Street, Lewiston … Downtown

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
We were both from the Lewiston / Auburn area.  After we each earned our Master of Architecture (in Vermont & New Orleans) we returned to Maine.  We soon realized that we had a unique opportunity in front of us we likely wouldn’t get in a big city; to get active in the community and feel like we have a voice.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
The beauty of the buildings in downtown, the river and the landscape …. but also life downtown can be much more spontaneous.  We don’t have to plan as many aspects of our social life, which is very refreshing.  We can decide spur of the moment that we want to walk around and see what is going on down the street, and stumble into an event like a gallery opening, or walk and meet up with our friends or family.  From where we live on Lisbon Street we are a few blocks from restaurants & bars, the library, art galleries, parks, yoga studios …..  (gabby) Too often, before we moved, I would get sucked in to using my car all day on the weekends …. now, we are able to walk to many of our errands, with our dog in tow.  I can’t wait to enjoy the summer in our new Lisbon Street digs.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I wish the buildings we have would stop being torn down.  People are so quick to say ‘it looks bad, lets tear it down’.  It kills me every time I see a prominent structure that gets a wrecking ball.  Too many times, it is not necessary and we are left with an empty lot or a building that looks terrible.  We have a unique identity here that sets us apart from many cities.  If we lose it, we could end up as a city of strip malls and urban sprawl; I would hate that.  This city was built on the river, the mills, and the canals.  We need to work together and fight to protect that heritage.

Beyond that, i’d like to have the sidewalks plowed and cleared better so folks without cars or people who just like to walk can do so safely. I’d like to see community events or parades along canal or Lisbon street. I’d like to see more occupied locally owned businesses, and owner occupied buildings. Better public transportation.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
New Orleans.  The energy of the people and their pride are like nothing else.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
For New Years Eve we went to Fuel for an amazing start to a new year.  With a fabulous band and many friends, we danced, ate and drank till we couldn’t any more.  Luckily it was a beautiful, fairly warm night.  All dressed up, we walked down the street to another party, danced till 4am and then walked back to our place.  It was so much fun!

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I see L/A as one community that needs cohesion.  Celebrate the differences but work together toward mutual goals.  It seems that once people have power, they really don’t want to give it up to become one community, but that can work against us in so many ways.  I think we may even benefit from a unified identity.  If Lewiston Auburn were considered one, we might have more influence on state politics.

Nicola Wells, Interim Co-Director for The Maine League of Young Voters (but at heart I’ll always be a Community Organizer), Lewiston

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
There are so many reasons I could give: work, love, adventure. But at the bottom of it all, I came to live in Lewiston because it feels the most like home of any place I’ve lived in the last ten years. I’m from a Polish community on the Northwest side of Chicago, that was going through it’s own process of post-industrial revitalization as I was growing up. My community was very family-oriented, and had lots of local businesses that made the neighborhoods thrive. Since my youth, my old neighborhood has undergone considerable gentrification that has forced the small businesses to close, pushed families like mine out of the community due to housing costs, and erased much of the richness of the diverse cultures that used to be around every corner. When I first came to Lewiston in 2009 for work (as an Organizer with the Center for Community Change), I instantly sensed that rich mix of old and new, foreign and familiar, and the bonds of family and community underlying both Lewiston and Auburn. I love the small businesses, the friendly conversations I can have walking around town, and the mix of cultures that we share. As I’ve gotten to know my faith community at Trinity Church, and countless other people in the community, Lewiston has come to feel like my home, more than DC, Paris, Brooklyn,or Philly. I was fortunate enough to have the option to choose where I wanted to live in the U.S. and I’ve happily chosen Lewiston.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I love St. Mary’s Nutrition Center. I recently went to one of their Winter Farmer’s Markets and was pleasantly surprised by all they had to offer: local music, fresh warm homemade food, tons of local produce, and lots of local crafts. The Nutrition Center/Local Sprouts and their Farmer’s Market play an integral role in our community’s health and I’d love to see more people come to their events.

I also love the local restaurants: from Fishbone’s for a nice candle-dinner for two, to Fuel and Marche when I need a little French flavor in my life, or the Three One Cafe and Mother India on Lisbon Street for a good curry. Holly’s is great for a bite and Gritty’s and Guthrie’s are always reliable for a good beer and music. What I love most is that I know if I go to any of these spots (and there are several others, unfortunately I couldn’t name all of them here – love yeah, Thai Jarearn Express – check more out here: http://www.declewiston.org/Restaurants.html), I’ll see a friendly face and get great service. And lest I forget, I’m a huge fan of the new Chill Yoga/Yoga Lounge spaces, and Art Pulse gallery on Lisbon Street (a great addition to L/A Arts). Yes, I can’t possibly name all my favorites.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I’d love to see even more community spaces/small businesses open. There’s great momentum in both Auburn and Lewiston, but I still see some empty buildings that could be put to great use. I’d like to see more spaces like New Beginnings, Trinity Jubilee Center, B Street, the Center for Women’s Wisdom and DEC Collaborative. Community centers are great spaces for people to connect, learn, and grow together. As I learned from my neighborhood in Chicago, if you develop only one kind of business, that serves one class of people, everyone loses out. I’d like us to cultivate more spaces that allow us to bridge class, age, culture… all of our differences.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
This is gonna sound cheesy, but it’s Paris. When I first went there at the age of 20 I never thought I’d like the city that much. I was just trying to go abroad. After a combined two years, I loved the access to fresh local food, the warmth of my neighbors and the access to incredible community music and arts events- many of the same things that have drawn me to Lewiston, actually.

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
After a long hard day at work over the summer, I went with a group of friends to my favorite pizza place (ever), Pat’s, and we had slices on the back porch over the river. Then we went to Sparetime Bowling for Cosmic Bowling and I won a buck knocking over a painted pin. It was a relaxed, jovial, and affordable night out.

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
In my mind, they already are unified. Not everyone sees it that way, but I think most young professionals move easily and frequently between the two centers and we’re all better off because of that. It would be great if the municipalities pulled their resources to do more shared community events to strengthen that bond

February 2011

Name/Occupation/Residency
Andrew Moreau/ Box Office Manager for the Franco American Heritage Center/ Lisbon Street in Lewiston

What brought you to L/A to: Live? Work? Recreate?
I moved to L/A for employment.  I moved back home to Livermore, Maine from DC a little over a year ago in between jobs, and was pleasantly surprised to see a job opening in my field of arts administration in my home state.  I was originally looking into law school, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to gain more work experience in my field with the current unemployment rate.

What do you enjoy most about downtown L/A?
I live in Downtown Lewiston, and I enjoy walking to work at the Franco Center.  Grittys, Guthries, Mother India as well as the Sears mall (to name a few) are all within walking reach.  While there may not be as many choices as NYC or Boston for nightly things to do, there are still a few fun things going on every night.  Working in entertainment in the area, I especially feel connected with all of the LA happenings.  I was surprised at how many arts organizations are in the area when I first moved back.

What would you like to see done differently in downtown?
I would love to see more young professionals living downtown.  As someone who lives right in downtown Lisbon Street, I honestly feel safe at all times of the day/ night inside and outside of my apartment.  It’s fun and the city(s) are appealing to the eye on a evening stroll, especially during the holiday season.

What is your favorite city ever visited and why?
Washington, DC is probably my first pick as far as cities.  There is always something to do there, usually for free.  With all of the arts organizations, internships, entry level positions in DC there is a huge pool of motivated young professionals ready to take on the world.  It makes for a great place to live and bounce off ideas, especially in the arts.  Seattle would be my second because it’s cool and encouraged to be a nerd there!

Describe a night out on the town, in downtown L/A, that you’ve had lately.
I went out with friends to Grittys.  We had a good time, enjoyed the live band and open space ideal for conversation.  I was one of the only people there that didn’t have a special “mug.”

Do you see value in a unified downtown identity of the Twin Cities?  Why?
I am relatively ignorant to the plusses/ minuses of a unified downtown versus distinct L and A, but for my purposes, both socially and professionally, I already consider them unified….  Auburn is just a walk over the bridge and the river makes for a scenic one.

September 2009

Tina Currie, Commercial Accounts Manager, Five County Credit Union

tina-currie-2.jpgWhat’s your favorite band?
I love a lot of different genres.  Music is always on at home, in my car, on my MP3 Player.  If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Phish.  Back in the day when they toured a lot, I saw them 25 times!

Favorite Place in Maine?
Anywhere I can enjoy nature; my back yard, Moosehead Lake, Popham Beach, and Baxter State Park are at the top of my list.

Are you originally from the area/state?
Yes, I was born and raised in the Waterville area.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
L/A has so much to offer, and lots of potential!  I envision Lisbon Street thriving and full of shops.  As a business lender, I hope to help make that happen.  The business community here is such a tight-knit group.  I moved to the area from Portland, where it is a very competitive environment.  There is a lot more camaraderie here.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
Five County CU is becoming more aggressive about growing our business portfolio.  Because of this, they decided to dedicate a staff member to making this happen.  I was offered the job and promoted to the position of Commercial Accounts Manager.  Since I work in our downtown Lewiston branch, management wanted to see what we could develop in the L/A area.  I see this as a wonderful opportunity for the credit union, businesses, and my career!

What would you want everyone to know about you?
My life revolves around the people I love and respect.  My husband Chris and I have been married for 12 years.  We have two kids, Casey and Elizabeth, and two pets, Moosey Kitty and our little doggie Tater Tot.  They all bring so much joy and happiness into my life.  After family comes work, which I also love.  I am blessed to be employed by a great company with many talented professionals that I respect.  I am excited about this new job and look forward to becoming more involved in the local business community.  I am very social and enjoy meeting new people.  Helping people by providing exceptional service and one on one attention is a priority for me.

What’s your favorite band?
That’s tough-I listen to mostly Christian music although I like some pop/rock alt..like Daughtry

Favorite Place in Maine?
Bar Harbor

Are you originally from the area/state?
Yes from Lewiston

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
I think there’s a lot of opportunity here. L/A really has a lot of growth going on and fosters an environment where people enjoy giving back to their community and getting to know the people within their community.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
I am very lucky to work for a credit union (Community Credit Union) that is willing to help their employees grow and develop as active community members. I have participated in the Androscoggin Leadership and Development program which really helped me in my career and I also attend Lewiston/Auburn College and am in the Leadership and Organizational Studies program. There’s a lot of opportunities here for young people who are ready to learn more and give back!

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I have a passion for community service and helping others. I am event chair for the Androscoggin County Relay For Life and that’s extremely important to me. I am always looking for others who share the same passion for helping others and bringing our community together for positive reasons!

Jennifer Gendron, Advertising Designer, Sun Journal jen-gendron-for-yplaa-of-the-month.jpg

What’s your favorite band?
My favorite Maine band is Motor Booty Affair.  I’m a Billboard Top-40 fan, I like to keep up on National and International artists.  I love to dance, so any music and/or band that gets me in the mood to boogie works for me.

Favorite Place in Maine?
Anywhere along our beautiful Maine coast or large ponds and lakes.  I live up to my Cancer Zodiac sign with my love of all things water related.  Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Mt. Blue State Park, Sebago Lakes Region all get visits every year.  Second to that is my own home and my parent’s home.  My Mom and I are avid gardeners, I helped establish most of the gardens at my parent’s home rural home in Greene over ten years ago and I am working on making my own Lewiston urban home a gardener’s delight.

Are you originally from the area/state?
Born and raised in Lewiston, Maine!  I only spent two years away in college – I came home to stay after graduation.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
This is my home and my culture.  I am a very proud Franco-American – I speak both English and French fluently.  My parents had the biggest part in making sure my two younger siblings and I kept our language and cultural roots.  All three of us remain in this community and plan to stay here for the duration of our working adult lives.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
I am an avid volunteer for many organizations (currently the American Cancer Society, Maine Music Society, Androscoggin Chamber, YPLAA, MOAC – Maine Outdoor Adventure Club) – in the past I’ve also worked in fundraising efforts for March of Dimes and Richelieu French Club.  Working at the Sun Journal has afforded me the opportunity to work with these non-profits on a continuous bases.  My extra-curricular volunteer work is supported by my workplace, and that has been very important to me.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
Other than everything I’ve already described?  If not apparent, I love to socialize with my friends and family – my calendar is often booked to the maximum.  I guess I don’t like to get bored!

March 2009

Sarah Mayberry, Tobacco Coordinator, Healthy Androscoggin

sarah_mayberry_1.jpgWhat’s your favorite band?
I can’t pinpoint one specific band as my favorite. I listen to music based on the mood I’m in or depending upon what I’m doing, like relaxing or exercising. I think the music on my ipod covers most genres.

Favorite Place in Maine?
Lake Pennesseewasee in the small town of Norway will always be one of my favorite spots in Maine. I grew up on Norway Lake (as it is known to the locals) and will always think of it as a great place to be during any season. You can always get outside for some fun, exercise,  and relaxation.

Are you originally from the area/state?
I was born in Norway, a town  in the western foothills of Maine and have lived in the state my entire life. I also attended college in Maine so I guess I qualify as a real Mainah!

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
I was fortunate to be able to come to the Lewiston-Auburn area to take the Tobacco Coordinator position at Healthy Androscoggin in September 2008.  The opportunity to work for a successful Healthy Maine Partnership like Healthy Androscoggin really drew me to the area.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
The work we do at Healthy Androscoggin requires community buy-in and collaboration with other organizations to be successful.  The Lewiston-Auburn area is a wonderful place to be for that.  We partner with many different organizations in the area and these collaborations help to achieve not only work goals but they also help to foster a sense of pride and responsibility in being a member of the Lewiston-Auburn community.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I love sports and am a fan of all the New England teams – especially the Red Sox and Patriots!  Soccer is probably my number one love, having played and coached all the way through college.  I like to read and I’ve been in a few book discussion clubs and I participate in several local and statewide committees including the Chronic Disease subcommittee of the new Lewiston-Auburn Public Health Committee and I’m on the Executive Committee of the Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine.

December 2008

Hillary Verrill, Programs Coordinator, Empower Lewiston

hillaryverrill.jpgWhat’s your favorite band?
I enjoy a wide array of music, always depending upon the mood that I’m. I listen to almost everything, and can’t really pick just one favorite.

Favorite Place in Maine?
Of course, there’s the usual favorite place many of us Mainah’s share, being the ocean. My other favorite place is the Old Port. I love the downtown city life that the Old Port offers.

Are you originally from the area/state?
I’m originally from Lewiston and after being a traveling Military Brat for the first ten years of my life, I returned to the area with my family.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
Lewiston is a great place to live and there are many great people in the area. We won All-America City status because our city has an extremely high level of people who volunteer and participate in our community, all to create a better community for everyone. I want to be a part of that and I want my son to grow up with those morals and values.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
Not to sound too cliche, but Lewiston-Auburn is like Cheers, “where everybody knows your name”. We are a large city, yet small enough that we all know each other. There are many people and events that make networking possible in this area. People actually take a stake in other people’s successes. I think anyone willing to work hard in Lewiston-Auburn can find a way to advance their career, and I am on that train ride and do not plan on getting off!

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I love living in Maine and making every day of my life one that I want to remember. I have been a single Mom for the past seven years and my son has been my inspiration to be the person that I am today which makes everything worth it in life.

September 2008

Danielle Renna, Director of Tours & Office Administration.

daniellerenna.JPGWhat’s your favorite band?
John Mayer. His music helps me feel relaxed.

Favorite Place in Maine?
Going to the beach. I enjoy going to Old Orchard Beach or Higgins Beach. Just sitting in the sand feeling the warmth of the sun on my face while hearing the waves, there is nothing else like it.

Are you originally from the area/state?
I was born in Portland, ME where I lived there till the age of 8 when I moved to Windham. I graduated from Windham High School in the year of 2000 where I entered the working world. I moved to Providence, RI to be a Nanny for a year. When living in Rhode Island for that year I truly missed everything Maine had to offer so I moved back to feel at home again.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
My boyfriend has lived in this area his whole life so I moved here in 2006 to be with him. I live in the city of Lewiston learning the ways of the roads and the different life style L/A has to offer than what I am used to down in Southern, Maine. Lewiston is becoming my home and I just hope it keeps on growing to keep other individuals like myself here. One thing I have learned about Lewiston is you need to take a second look. Never judge a book by its cover until you open a couple pages than you find the true beauty.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
Lewiston has a special charm that most people look over if they are not careful. I have noticed that in one way or another most people know each other here and by simply introducing yourself to one individual you are actually introducing yourself to about 10 individuals. I have been able to network myself better than any other community I have lived in. Just by going to a local store or simply going to the library and saying “hello” or mentioning Northeast Charter & Tour Co. Inc. I am able to start a conversation with someone and give them my business card to where it could lead to growth in my career.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I would like individuals to know that my name is Danielle Renna, I work for Northeast Charter & Tour Co. Inc. which I am the Director of Tours & Office Administrator. I am in a happy relationship for 3 yrs now. My boyfriend has two amazing girls that are my world. I’m an individual who is outgoing and loves to help other. If you ever see me just say hi and I would enjoy talking with you about what tour I may be able to offer you. One last note I would like to leave with individuals that may be just entering the work force is that you should always walk into your job with a smile and know that it is a new day. Never carry unpleasant emotions with you from the previous day. Also make sure that you believe in yourself and always go after your dreams.

August 2008

Clark Phinney, President and CEO at The ALZASA Group and Employee Health and Workers’ Compensation Coordinator at Central Maine Healthcare.

jenclark.JPGWhat’s your favorite band?
I’m a big country music fan so often it’s something country, I’m awaiting Marcel’s new album. However I am a child of the 80′s so Bon Jovi are frequent CDs both in the car and around the office – especially if I’m on a deadline.

Favorite place in Maine?
Fort Point Lighthouse in Stockton Springs. I grew up in Bucksport just up the road so made frequent trips to the state park and picnic area next to the lighthouse and the fort as a child. I still visit it when I go back home to visit my parents. I even have a framed picture of it in my office.

Are you originally from the area/state?
Yes – born and raised as we like to say. Grew up in Bucksport a paper mill town on the Penobscot River. Other than a couple years when I lived in the south while working for Habitat for Humanity I have always made Maine home.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
I came to L/A a few years after my wife and I were married (15 years ago). She is originally from Greene and her family all live around the L/A area. Working and living in the area has been great, we are able to enjoy the best of living in Maine while still being connected to family, friends and clients all over the world.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
I’ve benefited in many ways, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the opportunities I’ve had from this area, from contacts in the Chamber to working for a major healthcare provider in town to networking with other YPLAA members.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
Together with my business partner, Jen Messinger (winner of one of last years YPLAA of the Year awards) we have started The ALZASA Group, a safety, occupational health and workers’ compensation consulting firm. Alysha Fowler of the Employment Times

alysha-fowler.jpgWhat’s your favorite band?
My favorite band is Journey; when I was 12 I went with my dad to see the lead singer, Steve Perry, perform at the Lewiston Civic Center, now called the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Last year I went to Maryland with my husband and watched the band perform at an outdoor event (sans Steve Perry) and it has renewed my excitement about the band!

Favorite Place in Maine?
Popham Beach/Fort Popham is by far my favorite place in Maine. When I first met my husband we spent a lot of time there. That is also the place where we got married!

Are you originally from the area/state?
I was born in Brunswick, but I grew up in Woolwich and Bath. That area of the state will always have a special place in my heart.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
My husband and I chose to move to Auburn in 2002 because of the affordable housing market and easily accessible amenities.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
In 2004 I began working at Employment Times in Auburn as an Assistant and since then I have been promoted to Development Coordinator. Employment Times has taught me a lot about networking and developing connections in the community and for that I’m very grateful.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I love to sing and dance, I have my own karaoke machine and I’ve recently taken some dance classes at a studio in Brunswick, notice I didn’t say that I was any good, only that I love to perform! I’m also a BIG fan of baseball, specifically the Boston Red Sox.

James Sanborn of GHM Insurance Agency

james.jpgWhat’s your favorite band?
Tool

Favorite Place in Maine?
My home in Hebron. It is such a quiet relaxing place after a long day or week of work. A close second would be any golf course.

Are you originally from the area/state?
I grew up in the Southern Maine town of Limington, moved to Gray for a couple of years after college and then to Hebron in 2000.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
My wife is from the area so we purchased a home in Hebron to be close to her family. For 6 years I commuted to our Waterville office and in 2007 GHM opened a 3rd location in Auburn. Having been with the agency for 14 years I was chosen to manage the office in Auburn and I now enjoy a much shorter commute and more time at home with my family.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
There is so much happening in the L/A area and opening a new office gave me the opportunity to build a book of business from the ground up. When I was asked to manage the office in Auburn I knew it would be a challenge but the community has been great and with help from The Chamber and our customer base we are off to a great start.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I am married and have 3 children – 2 daughters and a son. They keep me busy and any time that I am not at work is spent with them. I enjoy playing golf and really enjoy working in the insurance industry. I am one of the few insurance agents in the State to attain both the Certified Insurance Counselor and Certified Risk Manager designations.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I am the youngest of 3 children who have all settled down in Lewiston with their families. I have been married for 6 years to my wife Jayne and within this time we have managed to create, by today’s standards, a rather large family. It started in 2001 with our Dog-Taylor, age 6, and snowballed form there. Kate, age 5, is the oldest of 4 girls. Audrey & Emily are twins that turned 3 in March and Addison, our baby of the family (just like my wife and I) is 11 months old. I enjoy spending time with my family and the outdoor activities the 4 seasons of Maine has to offer. I take great pride in being the 3rd generation of a family owned and operated business since 1950. I am also a Rotary member and involved in a local BNI group.

As they say, there’s no place like home! I was born and raised in Maine but attended college in New Hampshire. While away at college, I greatly missed home and my family. I realized then I wanted to live, work, and raise a family in Maine.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a First and Second Grade Looping Teacher at Montello School in Lewiston right out of college. I taught there for eight years. While teaching at Montello School I received a Master’s Degree in Literacy with a Focus in Elementary Reading. This past summer I decided to further my education once again and become certified as an Assistant Building Principal. I was blessed with the amazing opportunity to serve as Trinity Catholic’s Assistant Principal. Trinity Catholic’s staff, families and community members welcomed me with open arms. Thank you Trinity!

For pleasure I am an ARBONNE Independent Consultant (Skin and Health Care) and Silpada Representative (Fine Sterling Silver Jewelry). Are you originally from the area/state?
Grew up in Augusta and moved to Auburn after a six year detour to northern NY.

Why do you choose to live/work in the L-A area?
My wife got a job here first but I was very happy to come to L/A. I knew the area was on the rise both economically and culturally, so it was an easy decision. Also, I may not have grown up here but members of my family lived here three generations ago and I was excited to carry on that tradition.

How does/has the area benefited your professional career?
I originally worked in higher education so it was a worthwhile and anticipated career change to work in the historic preservation and environmental education fields. I have had an opportunity to blend several of my interests into this one position. I also have been fortunate to work with a diverse population of professionals and community leaders.

What would you want everyone to know about you?
Married with two sons, (our little presidents, Carter and Jackson). Living in L/A has given me an opportunity to be involved with some great organizations including Good Shepherd Food Bank, Androscoggin Land Trust, Museum L/A and L/A Rotary. Over the past several years I have been transcribing my great-grandfather’s journals and going through hundreds of his photos. As an historian it has been extremely interesting to read about how people spent their time and lived their lives a hundred years ago. Some of his journal entries discuss his time in Lewiston and the surrounding area.

Currently, on my anti-imperialist MP3 player, I’m listening to a mix of Jack Johnson, G. Love, and Mike Doughty (front man from Soul Coughing for those that don’t know).

Favorite place in Maine?
Five Islands Lobster Co. in Georgetown

Are you originally from Maine?
No, I grew up in upstate NY (Ithaca), although my wife grew up going to summer camp out in the Denmark/Bridgton area.

Why did you choose to live in Maine?
My wife and I wanted to get back to the northeast, and she got a job at Bates College which afforded us that opportunity.

How has your career benefited?
Outside of my employment I’m also pursuing photography, and the burgeoning arts scene in the L-A area has been wonderful for that. It’s given me opportunities to get my photography out into the public sphere, which I might not have otherwise received in other areas – very supportive of the “creative economy.”

What would you want everyone to know about you?
I’m an artist, and very much a supporter of local, sustainable economies. Everyone should buy more art.
